It may be cold outside, but the Dark Horse gym will be smokin’ Saturday as 24 girls basketball teams converge there for a pre-season jamboree. This gives teams a chance, coaches say, to play against schools they would never meet during the regular season. Plus, fans and competitors, alike, will have a chance to preview the girls basketball season.
Four local teams will be participating: Lakewood, Hobbton, Midway, and Clinton.
Out-of-county teams include Voyager Academy in Durham, Chapel Hill, Smithfield-Selma, South Johnston, West Johnson, Goldsboro, Cleveland, Southern Wayne, East Duplin, North Lenoir, Richlands, Camp Lejeune, Topsail, James Kenan, Cape Fear, North Brunswick, West Brunswick, Hoke, South Robeson, and Red Springs.
The games begin at 8 a.m. and will be held in the Clinton High main gym, the auxiliary gym, and the Sampson Middle School gym.
Each team will play three games that consist of two 20 minute halves with a running clock.
Admission is $5 and concessions, including hot dogs and pizza, will be available all day.
Of the four local teams, Midway kicks off the event at 8 a.m. in the Sampson Middle gym against Smithfield-Selma. Hobbton plays at 8:50 in the Dark Horse main gym against Voyager Academy. Clinton plays at 9:40 in the SMS gym vs Hoke; and Lakewood goes up against Chapel Hill in Clinton’s auxiliary gym at 10:30 a.m.
The teams go two more rounds before the competition ends around 6 p.m.
