Hobbton Middle and Midway Middle split Tuesday evening in middle school basketball with Midway Middle taking the girls game 46-14 while the Wildcats took the nightcap 34-25.
Midway’s girls jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. At the half, Midway held a 22-point lead at 27-5.
Midway Middle coach Selena Joseph said, “Both teams played hard. Both teams played great defense. Defense was the key to our game. That was what we worked on the hardest to shut down their tall girl (Nina Devone). I think that work for us tonight.”
Alex Canady led the Raider effort with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 8 steals. Leah Williams had 16 points, 8 steals and 3 assists. Madeline Royal and 4 points and 4 rebounds, and Logan Baggett had 3. Maggie Warren had 6 rebounds.
For Hobbton, Devone had 11 points before fouling out late in the 4th quarter.
In the nightcap, using a balanced scoring attack, the Wildcats jumped out to a 5-point lead after one quarter. Midway made a comeback run in the second to cut the Wildcat lead to 3, 16-3, at the half. In the second half, the Wildcats widened their margin on a run and gun offense.
Hobbton coach Jackson Temple said, “It was a hard fought effort by both teams and a great defensive effort. Our guys hustled and have a lot of heart and they showed it again tonight. They never quit and never gave up and I’m proud of them.”
Midway coach Josh Bullard said he thought his young Raiders missed a lot of open shots. He also credited Hobbton for out-rebounding his team.
Calaeb Robinson led the scoring with 12 points. Teammates, Omar Farrior and Raquan Bryant had 9 each with JaQuan Farrior rounding out the effort with 3.
For Midway, Michael Kramer had 7 points; Gregg Orr, 6; Austin Smith, 4; and Reese Wilson, 4.
Midway hosts Union Middle Thursday while Hobbton has the rest of the week off.
