The Hobbton Middle Wildcats volleyball team improved their record to 5-1 Thursday night with a four set win over Sampson Middle.

“Sampson really scared me today,” said Hobbton coach Chip Pollock. “After our five set match with Midway on Tuesday, I was worried about an athletic team like Sampson exploiting our fatigue.”

Hobbton looked strong at the beginning, opening a 22-3 lead, before Sampson came charging back with an 11-point run. Hobbton eventually closed the set 25-14.

“Thank God for Madison Warren’s 11 straight service points to start the set, ” Pollock noted. “Sampson came roaring back to make it a game, fortunately, we had a pretty good cushion.”

The Dark Horses’ athletic play propelled them to a second set win, 25-15.

“Sampson has several girls that can flat out hit. We played well in the second, but just couldn’t find an answer to their power,” Pollock remarked.

Hobbton closed out the match by winning the final two sets 25-20 and 25-23.

“Our girls showed a lot of character today. We had two girls that weren’t feeling well and one that got hurt, yet they still left with a win,” Pollock stated. “Over a team like Sampson, that’s something to be proud of.”

The Wildcats were paced by Nina Devone (14 kills), Warren (18 service points), Makenzie Williams (8 service points), and Alona Rhodes/Maddy Roesch (9 assists each).

Hobbton faces R-S next Thursday while Sampson hosts R-S on Tuesday.
