Hobbton Middle School students are winners at helping others. They recently won the Second Harvest Food Bank’s 2012 Students Against Hunger Contest.

When a food bank representative came to a principals’ meeting and shared how schools could get involved in helping others through their contest, Hobbton Middle principal Kevin Hunter knew he had to take this information back to his school.

“I asked if there were any clubs that would like to do this for a service project and the Beta Club stepped up,” says Hunter. “They did a great job at getting the whole school involved.”

“Our Beta Club sponsors, Ms. Herring and Ms. Kearney, thought it would be a wonderful idea to help the community,” explains Camryn Pate, president of Hobbton Middle’s Beta Club. “Students brought in canned food for the Heart of Carolina Food Drive; we had a school dance, and we sold snacks to raise money. After all, our Beta Club motto is “Let us lead by serving others.”

Emily Sutton, vice president of Hobbton Middle’s Beta Club, adds that the contest not only helped others but it also broadened the students’ understanding of needs in their own community. “Bringing in canned food for the hungry has helped us realize that not only are people in other countries hungry, but also people in our own communities,” says Sutton.

When all the items and money was counted, Hobbton Middle collected over 800 pounds of canned food and raised $1,700.

After learning of their winning contribution, the eighth-grade Beta Club members, along with Hunter, traveled to Fayetteville on Wednesday, Dec. 5 to attend the food bank’s community food drive. While there, they were recognized for their award-winning donation.

“I thought the kids did an excellent job. It’s great how they all got involved,” says Hunter. “It’s doing things like this that help us teach them how to be well-rounded citizens.”
