Midway Middle’s Caleb Sanders waits on the pitch from during Monday’s middle school conference battle with the Hobbton Wildcats. The Raiders move to 3-0 in conference play with the 16-1 win.
SPIVEY’S CORNER — Despite a change in venue due to excessive rain at Hobbton Monday, the fields were quite dry at Midway Middle where the Lady Wildcats picked up a big win over Midway Middle, 5-2.

Evidently the majority of the supporters had received the message regarding the change because there was a good group of supporters from both sides at the game. In fact, there were even some Union Middle supporters seen in the crowd since their games with Roseboro-Salemburg Middle were postponed because of the rain. That game will be made up after the Easter break.

But rain and a venue change had little impact on the Lady Wildcats who came to play, and win.

Taylor Olson pitched for seven innings from the mound for the Wildcats and struck out a total of nine Lady Raiders.

Midway took an early lead in the game and led until the top of the sixth inning when Michaela Wilson tied the game. Taylor Bowden gave the lead to Hobbton with a big hit to right field.

“I was pleased with the girls bats today and could tell that practice last week had paid off,” said Lady Wildcat coach Pat Bowden. The Midway girls played very hard in the game and were tough opponents.”

Leaders for Hobbton: Michaela Wilson, 3/4; Taylor Bowden, 2/4; Taylor Olson, 2/4; Bailiegh Moser, 1/4; Casey Hobbs, 1/4; Haley Evans, 1/3; Cheynee Roscoe, 1/3.

Lady Raiders coach Sam Kitchin did not call in by press time, so leaders for the team were not available.

The Midway Middle Raiders took the victory Monday night with a rather solid hitting game and with some costly errors from the Hobbton Middle Wildcats to win 16-1 in three innings on their home field. Matthew Phillips was the winning pitcher for the Raiders, going for three innings, allowing two hits, one walk and striking out seven. He had no earned runs.

Scoring: 1 2 3

HMS: 0 1 0

MMS: 8 3 5

Leaders for Midway: Matthew Phillips, 2/3, 2 HRs, 3 runs; Caleb Sanders, 1/1, double, 2 runs; Taylor Calcutt, 1/2, double, 1 run; Cody Baker, 1/1, double; Cole Matthews, 1/1, David Pressley, 1/1; Troy Spell, 1/1.

The Raiders are now 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Sampson County Middle School Conference.

Hobbton coach Chuck Lively did not call in by press time and leaders for the Wildcat team were not available.

Hobbton will host Roseboro-Salemburg Middle Wednesday while Sampson Middle travels to Midway Middle. Game time is 4 p.m.

Midway will travel to Hobbton Middle on April 30 as the teams switched for Monday’s games which is their next regular scheduled meeting.

I was wondering. Does Hobbton and Midway Middle Schools put up blue tarps to discourage busy body fathers from interferring with the school coaches during a game??? Thank, you, Coach Eddie Bass you're my hero. I wish the rest of the other athletic establishments had the testicular fortitude as you to stop the " Al Bundy's" of the world.
