KENANSVILLE — The third annual James Sprunt Community College Scholarly Men of Success Male Mentoring Academy Fundraising Banquet will be Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Mad Boar Restaurant in Wallace.
Special guest speakers will be Elaine Marshall, North Carolina Secretary of State, and N.C. Sen. Daniel T. Blue Jr.
Elected in 1996, Marshall is the first woman Secretary of State and the first female elected to statewide executive office in N.C. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Textiles and Clothing in 1968, and her Juris Doctor (JD) from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University in 1981. Her political career has spanned 30 years in the Democratic Party as NC Secretary of State, State Senator, and Democratic Party offices.
Blue represents the state’s 14th Senate district since his appointment in 2009. He previously served in the N.C. House of Representatives from 1981 through 2002 and from 2006 through his 2009 Senate appointment. Blue was the Speaker of the NC House of Representatives from 1991 until 1994. He is the first African American to hold the post of Speaker in NC. Blue graduated from NC Central University and the Duke University School of Law. He has served as chairman of the Duke University’s Board of Trustees since 2009.
The purpose of the male mentoring program is to create success among a diverse population of minority males by focusing on increasing retention and graduation rates.
Proceeds from the fundraiser go to the Male Mentoring Academy housed in the James Sprunt Community College Leadership Center, and under the direction of Jimmy T. Tate, Executive Director, Strategic Initiatives and Organizational Effectiveness at JSCC.
