The Clinton JV boys took home another easy win this week as they battled the Union Spartans Friday night, giving them a sound 71-21 thumping.

The Horses took control of the game from the beginning and never backed off.

“Our team’s defense and ability to work as a team helped us a lot in winning this game” stressed head coach Bobby Lamb.

Jaalen Best led Clinton 11 points. He was followed by Logan Batehlor with 9 points; Michael Boykin, 6 points; KenJuan Morrisey, 6 points; and Emmanuel Howard with 5 points.

The JV Spartans couldn’t keep up with the powerful Horses, whop opened up a huge lead and kept pounding away, ahead 29-15 by the half.

“Union came out with a good fight in the first quarter but our defense was strong enough to get the win” Lamb said.

By the end of the third quarter, Union only managed to gain 4 points, bringing their score to 18 while Clinton had amassed 56.

Union JV coach Bryant Register agreed that his Spartan boys started off strong and competitive, but turnovers and low-scoring plagued them.

“We got some good shots against a strong press from Clinton in the first period, and I had an OK feeling about our game, but then in the second half nothing went right,” Register said. Any time you only score 6 points in a quarter, that’s a recipe for disaster.

“The second half was nothing but a turnover fest. We missed a lot of opportunities and, give Clinton all the credit, they did a great job, too”

Register tipped his hat to the JV Horses, praises them for a good game. “I congratulate Coach Lamb. He has a great team,” Register said.

Leading the way for Union was Traquan Peterson with 7 points. Christian Boykin had 4 points and Brandon Johnson, Jawan Newkirk, Jamar Newkirk, John English Jr. and DeVon Henry all had 2 each. Carter Spearman had 1 point.

Register said it was back to work for the Spartans Monday. “I told the guys I still loved them, and that we’d start again Monday working to improve.”

Clinton JV boys are now 7-0 overall. They will play at home Tuesday against the Richland Wildcats at 4:30.

Union moves to 1-4 overall. They begin conference play Tuesday on the road against James Kenan, then travel to North Duplin Wednesday and finish out the week hosting Pender on Thursday.
