The Midway boys junior varsity basketball team jumped out to a large early lead Monday night against the visiting Rosewood Eagles, only to see it dissipate in the fourth period. The Raiders did, however, regain their composure to win coming away with the 56-43 victory.
The home team led 23-10 after a quarter. In the second period, Rosewood started to whittle away at that lead, closing it to 32-23 at intermission. The Eagles trailed 37-33 going into the final frame.
With 6:55 left in the fourth period, it was a 2-point game at 37-35. Rosewood would compete but never get closer. A 3-pointer by Jamarrious Baggett with 5:45 left increased the Raider lead to 42-35. Baggett hit another basket moments later for a 44-38 score.
Tyler Mayes connected on a 2-pointer to put Midway up by 8 and with 2:07 remaining, Cameron Hobbs drove the lane for 2 points. Ayden Canady nailed 2 free throws with 1:11 left to make it 50-40 and the Raiders would coast from there.
Baggett finished with 18 points to lead the home team. Mayes added 8. Jackson Carr and Canady connected on 6 each. Hobbs, Larry Blanks and Paris Smith had 5 a piece. J. D. Lockamy added a free throw.
“I think it was our ugliest game of the year,” asserted Midway coach Matthew Creech. “We were rusty playing our first Monday game. I’m proud of my team’s heart. They rallied in the fourth quarter and finished strong.”
The Raiders will travel to Trask on Tuesday.
