Leigh Jones, principal of McMichael High School (DMHS), has been selected as the 2013 Wells-Fargo Principal of the Year for Rockingham County Schools (RCS) in a program co-sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and Wells-Fargo Bank. Ms. Jones now moves on to compete with other local award recipients from the Piedmont-Triad Region of the State.

She is the daughter of Tom and Lynn Jones, both Sampson County natives.

When asked about receiving the Principal of the Year honor Jones stated, “I am completely shocked and honored to win this award from my colleagues. I am happy for my staff, my students, and the entire Phoenix community because they are the reason I was able to win this award. It is because of the hard work, passion, and the commitment to learning that exists within our building. I work with the best staff and I’m extremely lucky to be surrounded by diverse and bright students, supportive parents, and a wonderful community.”

Jones has served as principal of McMichael High School since 2011 and has over 13 years of experience in education. During her educational career, she has served as a high school PE teacher, a high school girl’s varsity basketball coach, an assistant women’s basketball coach at Appalachian State University, an elementary school PE teacher, an assistant principal, a principal intern, and a middle school and high school principal.

Jones earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Appalachian State University and a Masters of School Administration from UNC-Greensboro. She is also a graduate of UNC-Greensboro’s Principal Fellowship Program.

Superintendent Dr. Rodney Shotwell said Jones’ honor is well deserved. “Leigh Jones has proven herself as an excellent leader and is the epitome of a team builder. She sets high expectations, empowers others to assist her in leadership, and she motivates those around her. We congratulate her on her recognition as Principal of the Year and we are grateful for her service to the students, parents and staff of McMichael High.”
