It was all out war on Union’s volleyball court Wednesday, and the Patriots came away the victors, taking home the Tri-County tournament championship trophy for the 2012 season. They won three out of the five sets against Lakewood, the regular season co-champs, with scores of 25-20,20-25,25-15, 21-25, 3-15.

This was the third time these two teams have met this season, with Pender winning two out of three of those matches.

The Lady Leopards came on strong in the first game and jumped to a big lead, but the Patriots managed to work their way back into the game, coming within five points before Lakewood ended it, 25-20.

Pender took control in the second game and had a 9-point lead at one point. Lakewood never gave up, though, and managed to pull within 5 before the Patriots hit the winning point.

In the third game, both teams kept the score bundled up until it hit 6-all and then the Leopards jumped ahead with 5 quick points and never looked back. Scoring in the fourth game started out like the third, with it staying tied until it reached 7-all, then the Patriots took a quick lead. The Leopards were never far behind, but just couldn’t get that go-ahead point.

The momentum from the fourth set win carried over into set five and the Patriots never let the ball hit the floor. They got several corner points where the ball was just inches inside the boundary lines.

The Lady Leopards put down some great game stats, especially Allyson Heinz, who set up 29 assists and got 12 service points. Morgan Herring had 15 service points, 13 kills, and 2 blocks; Bailey Dudley, 20 service points, 1 kill; Teisha Rich, 16 service points, 17 kills; Rashyda Parker, 12 kills, 5 blocks; Jache’ Servance, 4 kills, 2 blocks; Katie Stewart, 8 service points; and Anna Heinz, 15 service points.

The Leopards, as well as Pender, Midway, and James Kenan will all play Saturday in the first round of the state 1A playoffs. The tournament schedule won’t be revealed until Thursday afternoon.
