Midway’s girls moved into the win column Tuesday night with their first victory of the season, this one a road game against Princeton. final score was 52-36, Raiders.
It was, coach Jennifer Honeycutt said, a good way to avenge last week’s loss to 2A Clinton.
Although the Lady Raiders started off slow, trailing the home team 12-8 at the end of the first period, they soon found their footing and their way to the basket. By the end of the first half, the Midway had taken control of the game, ahead at the break 25-15.
“We started putting down some shots when we got the right combination together,” Honeycutt said. “Once we got our feet under us and found what worked, we pulled away in the second quarter.”
And Midway never looked back. Even with starters out sick, the team pulled together and played hard, finding ways to score.
“It was great to see others step up and take on the challenge. They did a great job,” Honeycutt stressed. “It was an overall team effort.”
The Lady Raiders were playing without center Haley Beasley who turned her ankle before the season began. “We are hoping to have her back by the game with South Johnston Thursday. I’m eager to see what she can do for us in the post position,” the girls coach noted.
Leading the way in Tuesday’s Lady Raider win was Jennifer Blackmon, 12 points, 13 rebounds; Morgan Tew, 11 points, 10 rebounds; Jada Cannady, 7 points; Amber Poole, 6 points, 5 assists, 7 rebounds; Hannah Hubbard, 6 points; and Elizabeth McCullen, 6 assists.
“Elizabeth really stepped up for us tonight. She had a good game, taking care of the ball for us throughout.”
The Raider girls are 1-1 on the season. They travel to South Johnston Thursday afternoon.
