Lakewood’s JV girls got a blistering road win Friday night, downing Pender 41-11.
A powerful pressure defense by the young Leopards attributed for the Patriots low score, according to Lakewood coach Loftin Kerr. “I really think the press bothered them a great deal, and we were able to capitalize on the turnovers we were able to force them to make.”
Lakewood came out ready to play, pointing 9 points on the board in the first quarter while holding the home team scoreless.
The second period wasn’t much better for the Patriots, who went into the half with only 3 points to their credit. Lakewood had gained another 21 for the 30-3 advantage at the break.
Kerr said the JV Lady Leopards got a lot of points off fast breaks. “I was really pleased with the way the girls were playing.”
In the third quarter, Lakewood scored 9 more points; Pender 4. And in the final frame, the Leps added 2 while allowing the Patriots 4 more.
Leading scorers for the JV were Jada Moore with 16 points; Aja Stephens, 10; Brianna Evans, 6; Chanel McLellyn, 4; Alexis Williams, 3; and Justina Henry, 2.
“Jada dominated for us tonight (Friday). I was real proud of how hard she played. She worked hard on defense and offense,” Kerr said.
The win moves the JV Leopard record to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
