TURKEY — Mr. Leonard Ray Herring, 87, of 334 Faison Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at Southwood Nursing and Retirement Center.
The funeral will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19, at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home Chapel in Clinton with Dr. Michael Howard and the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. An interment service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 20, at Wilson Family Cemetery in Faison.
Mr. Herring, born in Duplin County, was the son of the late Clarence Leonard Herring and D’ella Bryant Kelly Herring and was the husband of Mildred Wilson Herring. He was retired from insurance sales and was a Korea War Veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended Turkey Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. A brother, J. W. Herring, and a sister, Nora Pauline Herring, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mildred Wilson Herring of the home; four children, Gloria Jean Herring Howard and husband, Michael of Mechanicsville, Va., Vickie Herring Daw of Clinton, Leonard “Ray” Herring Jr. of Turkey, and Connie Herring Smith and husband, Mike of Turkey; a brother, Carroll Herring of Mt. Olive; 12 grandchildren, Chrystal H. Robins and spouse, Brian, Kesha H. Cummings and spouse, Kevin, April Best and spouse, Kenneth, Lynwood Daw and spouse, Danielle, Philip Daw and spouse, Amber, Heather Jernigan and spouse, Jarrett, Cherish Smith and spouse, Terry, Amanda Edgerton and spouse, Jeremy, Reed Herring, Adam Smith, Raechel Smith, and Raegan Smith; 14 great-grandchildren, Morgan Robins, Brenden and Braxton Pope, Logan and Libbie Best, Lucas Daw, Madison, Mason, and Matthew Jernigan, Dawson, Drake, and Davis Smith, Emily and Ella Kate Edgerton.
The family will receive friends Friday evening following the funeral at the funeral home and other times at the home.
