A Clinton man driving the wrong way down Main Street managed to run up on a median, onto a sidewalk and nearly into a downtown business early Saturday morning. What’s more, he landed himself in trouble with city law enforcement officers who charged him with myriad offenses, including operating a motor vehicle while impaired.

Alsonso Hernandez Luis of 25 Carolina Pine Drive, Clinton was charged with DWI, no operator’s license, operating a vehicle in the wrong direction and driving carelessly and heedlesslly in a willful and wanton manner. He was placed under an $8,000 secured bond.

Luis is charged with driving his 2004 Nissan the wrong way down Main Street around 2:45 a.m., running over the medium near Wall Street and traveling onto the sidewalk and into the site of the Wall & Main eatery, 103 Wall St., that is currently under construction.

Damage to the brick work on the building’s facade was estimated at $1,000.

No further details were available.
