Returning after a long hiatus from the basketball court, Midway’s JV girls started off a little flat against visiting Trask, but they soon found their footing and rolled by the young Titan girls 36-24.

“Between not having played in a while and moving some of our girls up to varsity, we were a little rusty,” said Raider coach Allen McLamb. “Some of these girls had never been on the court together before, but they stepped up play pretty quickly. By the second and third quarter, they were playing good basketball.”

The-scoring game started slow, with neither team able to find the basket that often in the first quarter. At the end of the period, the team’s were knotted at only 5.

They stepped up in the second, with Midway jumping ahead and taking a 17-13 lead into the half.

The young Raider girls extended that lead in the third period, taking a commanding upper hand, and by quarter’s end they were ahead 32-19.

“Overall, I was pleased with how the girls played,” McLamb said. “We had six girls score. Any time you do that, it’s a good night.”

Ashlyn Warren and Kelsey Pondo led Midway’s scoring with 8 points and 8 rebounds a piece. Also scoring were Kimberly Sublett, 6 points; Savannah Bullins, 6; Taylor Fairlcoth, 6; and Emily Williams, 2.

After Tuesday’s game against Wallace, which was called in too late for the Independent’s deadline (see those scores in Thursday’s paper), the Raiders will take on Lakewood’s JV Leopards Friday night.
