The Hobbton Middle Wildcats hosted the Midway Middle Raiders Wednesday afternoon. Midway’s girls won 45-17; Hobbton’s boys grabbed the other, 56-44.
Hobbton Middle’s girls jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first quarter and a held a 15-12 lead at the half. Midway’s girls found their game in the second half and held Hobbton to 2 points while scoring 33 points themselves.
Midway coach Selena Joseph said, “It took us a while to get going this afternoon, but I felt like once we got going, we did a great job on defense. It took a while for our shots to start falling but eventually we got everything together.”
“Midway played a great game. I think we just lost focus. Midway always comes prepared and we just couldn’t pull it out. Both teams played real hard but turnovers just killed us,” commented Hobbton coach Parenza Best.
For the Raiders, Alex Canady led the scoring effort with 13 points and 6 steals. Leah Williams had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Hannah Lucas had 4 points and 7 steals, Maggie Williams had 4 points and 7 rebounds. Also, Madeline Royal had 4 points and 8 rebounds, and Lindsay Naylor had 4 points. Sabrina Crowell and Rachael Hodges had 2 point each.
Nina Devone led the scoring for the Wildcats with 11.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats pretty much dominated the Raiders, leading the whole game. The score was 18-9 after one frame and 27-2 at the half. The Wildcats led by 10, 41-31 after 3. In the fourth, the Raiders made a run and cut the Wildcat lead to 6 before the Wildcats starting hitting 3-pointers and pushed the margin upward. The final was 56-44.
Jaquan Farrior led the Wildcat effort with 18 points. Omar Farrior was close behind with 16. Frankie Faison had 10 and Raquan Bryant had 6.
For Midway, Reece Wilson had a game high 25 points; Michael Kramer had 7 and Austin Smith had 4.
Hobbton coach Jackson Temple said, “It’s a reflection of what these young men have done all year. They’ve play to a point where they give everything they have on the floor to the very last buzzer. I’m proud of them getting this win tonight at home. But, more than that, I told them that when they look at their team picture 25 years from now they are going to say we were one hard playing team.”
Midway coach Josh Bullard offered thanks to the community for its continued support, both on the road and at home, of the middle school teams throughout the season.
“I can’t thank them enough; their support has been awesome all season,” Bullard said.
The Raiders finished their season at 4-8.
