Midway takes two over Tigers in volleyball game

WARSAW — Meeting for the second time this season, Midway traveled to Tiger territory Tuesday, where both the Raiders JV and varsity beat James Kenan. The JV won in two sets; the varsity in three.

According to reports from head coach Heather Johnson, the JV Raiders were able to pull out a 0-2 victory over the Tigers with the scores 12-25 and 14-25.

As for leading players on the court, Jennifer Blackman had six hits; Jada Cannady had nine hits and one ace; Kaitlyn Jackson had two hits; Taylor Lee had a hit and one ace; Michaela Slatniske had six hits; Elizabeth Smith had 11 sets; and Erin Strickland had three aces.

The varsity, too, was able defeat the Tigers in three sets. The scores were 12-25, 12-25 and 17-25.

After securing wins over the Tigers in the first two sets, the Raiders were determined to end the game during the third; however, James Kenan took an early seven-point lead over Midway.

When Raider Emily Barber’s serve rotation came around, the score was 7-2; however, she as able to close the gap and tie it up at 7 with multiple aces executed. Barber had a total of 11 aces during all three sets Tuesday, in addition to three sets, 12 hits and one block.

The game remained an up-and-down battle between the Raiders and the Tigers with one team slightly jumping ahead on the board, and the other fighting to take the lead.

Midway was able to take that lead during Kacey Wrench and Lauren Smith’s serve rotations. Wrench was able to bring the score up 14-17 and Smith took the game to 22-15. During all three sets, Wrench had eight aces and Smith trailed slightly with five aces.

Although James Kenan took their score to 17, Midway took the set 25-17.

As for highlights, Johnson provided that Leanna Fann had seven aces; Hayley Tyndall had two aces and one block; Morgan Warren had two aces and six hits; Caroline Warren had six hits; and Smith had nine hits.
