Squeaking by Cherokee last Friday with a 14-7 win, North Duplin has advanced to the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association playoffs. The Rebels will square off against Elkin tonight on their home turf.
“We played very well defensively (last Friday); we had to make adjustments on the field because they (Cherokee) ran a different offense than we saw on the tape,” head coach Huge Martin said of the victory, which pushed them into the district round of the playoffs.
Tonight, however, is a totally different ball game. The Rebels will face Elkin of the 2A/1A Mountain Valley conference. Traditionally a powerful contender on the field, fashioning a 10-2 record, Martin feels the Elks will enter into Rebel territory kicking.
“Elkin is very good; they execute as well as any team we have played,” Martin commented, adding that the Elks play at a very high level, and they are going to be a challenge for the Rebels.
A positive contribution to North Duplin’s team is the Rebels’ ability to move the ball, Martin insisted.
“We moved the ball very well last week, and moving the ball helps to control the clock,” Martin explained.
According to the coach, Devin Oliver was able to get to the edge and make plays happen on the field, which is a necessity to obtain a win.
On the other hand, with all teams comes weaknesses; therefore, Martin listed some areas which the Rebels focused on this week during practice.
“Missing blocks here and there put us behind the chains, and we had a few penalties which pushed us back,” Martin admitted.
Despite the mistakes, Martin furthered, “Overall, we played much better than we had during the regular season.”
In preparation for the showdown tonight, the Rebels will focus on being a team and doing the best they can as a team.
“We try to be very basic and do what we do, as well as we can. Week to week we adapt from what we saw the week before,” Martin concluded.
