Vigilant neighbors are being credited for the arrest of two Sampson County men now charged with breaking into a Plantation Lane residence Wednesday.
In fact, Victor Lara, 20, Plantation Lane, Clinton, and Pedro Rubio Jr., 19, also of Plantation Lane, are both facing charges of breaking and entering, larceny after B&E and possession of stolen goods. The two were jailed under separate $25,000 bonds and given trial dates of Sept. 28.
The pair were taken into custody after sheriff’s deputies were called by nearby neighbors who observed two men breaking into a Plantation Lane residence.
According to Sampson County Sheriff’s Master Cpl. Marcus Smith, officers responded to the tip and located Lara and Rubio on Oliver Lane, just a short distance from the area where the break-in had occurred. Based on descriptions and further investigation, the two were taken into custody and charged.
The property stolen from the residence, an unknown amount of coins, was not found.
Officers believe the pair gained entry into the home by breaking out a window. Damage to the window was estimated at $100.
Last week, Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton reiterated earlier statements he has made about so-called “nosy neighbors” and how much being vigilant in a community means in helping to solve crimes.
Thornton noted that there should not be a negative connotation to being a nosy neighbor because those who watch out for suspicious activity in a given area can often assist in solving, and sometimes even preventing, crimes.
“It pays to be vigilant,” Thornton said last week. “If you see something that looks out of the ordinary, call us so we can check it out. If it turns out to be nothing, who cares.”
