There will be two new assistant principals at Sunset Avenue and Butler Avenue schools in the fall thanks to approval from the Clinton City Board of Education earlier this week.
The board approved the moves of Lakechisa Phillips to Sunset Avenue and Jennifer Pope to Butler Avenue to take the places of Jacqueline Howard, who retired, and Sharon Herring, who resigned, respectively.
Phillips is coming from E.E. Smith Middle School in Fayetteville, where she served as an assistant principal, while Pope, who was one of five nominees for Clinton City Schools’ Teacher of the Year in 2011-12, has been employed by the city system for many years as a teacher, most recently at L.C. Kerr School.
The vote to hire the two new assistant principals was unanimous.
Attorney vote
In an unrelated matter, the school board took steps during the special called meeting Monday to fill the currently vacant attorney’s position, at least in the interim.
Board members unanimously OK’d superintendent Stuart Blount to seek an “interim” attorney to represent the board while they continue mulling the process they’ll undergo to hire a new lawyer.
The system has been without an attorney since July 15, when long-time representative Albert Kirby stepped away from the job after his firm’s contract was not renewed.
Although prospective law firms were not discussed in open session, board members only made the motion to allow Blount to interview attorneys for the position.
“It is only an interim position,” said administrative assistant Jackie Murray. “He will be looking for an interim attorney.”
Blount will begin interviews this week.
