While investigators continue piecing together details of a Nov. 11 shooting that left one man dead and another injured, the county medical examiner has released the cause of death.
Christopher Perice Owens, 23, of Garland, was found dead on the floor of a double-wide trailer on Castle Lane, by deputies responding to a shots fired call from a neighbor. The caller advised that they heard “multiple gunshots” around 2:20 p.m. from the residence next to them.
Dr. Barr said Owens was shot four times —, three times in the left leg and once through the chest.
“The shot that caused the death was one that went through his chest, from right to left,” said Dr. Barr. “It (the bullet) basically destroyed his heart and the cause of death was from massive internal bleeding.”
The medical examiner said that the other three bullet wounds to Owen’s leg wouldn’t have killed him.
“They were non-fatal wounds (on his leg),” Dr. Barr said. “Initially, we were thinking there were five wounds, but as it turned out, there were only four.”
Investigators are still trying to determine what happened. Right now, all that has been released about the incident is that Owens was killed and another man, Evans Cromartie, 24, of Harrells, came to the Sheriff’s Department that same evening, regarding the incident. He had a gunshot wound to his shoulder and was taken to the Sampson Regional emergency room for treatment.
“As of right now, there have been no charges filed,” said Capt. Eric Pope. “Currently, investigators are still conducting interviews with potential witnesses and processing physical evidence located on Castle Lane to determine what transpired. Cumberland County is assisting with the processing of some of the evidence and the SBI is also involved with the investigation.”
Reports state that deputies also observed multiple bullet holes in the walls of the residence.
Dr. Barr noted that there were “at least” 15 shots fired the afternoon of the incident.
Officials said that neither Owens, nor Cromartie were residents of the double-wide located on Castle Lane.
