Bringing the salty air to Clinton, the Dark Horses would fight the Topsail Pirates in a chaotic fight on the gridiron Friday night, but it was the Pirates that prevailed with a 28-14 win.

The Pirates would threaten the Dark Horses — and leave the fans holding their breath — scoring not one, but two touchdowns only two minutes into the first quarter. Playing as hard as they could, Clinton’s defense tried to prevent the Pirates from sailing into the end zone, but it was to no avail.

The Pirates found an empty hole in each play, and made their way to the end zone, and before long Topsail was up 21-0. But Clinton wasn’t ready to give up.

Starting off the second quarter with new tactics, the Horses turned up the heat. Tykearion Stevens opened the door when he found the end zone. With a great kick provided from Justin Parker, Clinton had 7 on the scoreboard before heading into the half.

Battling back and forth, Clinton would struggle to keep up with the Pirate offense, though.

Topsail’s Addison Futrell attempted to go to the air for a score only to be trucked by the mighty Spencer Jacobs from Clinton.

But Topsail would not be denied, scoring again.

Though behind, Clinton was able to get a second TD before the end of the second quarter. Demontio Bryant got the much needed touchdown in the last 4 seconds of the second quarter. The score at the half was 21-14.

Clinton and Topsail would continue their battle throughout the third quarter. Spencer Jacobs and Tykearion Stevens got their teammates closer and closer to the end zone, but would be stopped by Topsail’s defense over and over again.

The Pirates refused to slow their game down, while the Horses continued to struggled.

Beginning the last quarter of the night, the Dark Horses would give the last 12 minutes of the game their all, but their opponent’s healthy lead proved too much for them to overcome.

Topsail would take home the win, leaving Clinton with a 28 to 14 loss.

Rushing, Tykearion Stevens had 16 carries for 92 yards, Demontio Bryant had 9 carries for 71 yards, and Spencer Jacobs had 8 carries for 27 yards. Passing, Greg Smith had 4 for 3, 1 interception for 103 yards. Receiving, Kris Royal had 1 catch for 49 yards and Demontio Bryant had 3 catches for 54 yards.

Clinton will travel to East Duplin Friday, Oct. 12, for a 7:30 p.m. game.
