It was a battle to the end Wednesday as Midway’s boys wrangled with undefeated Wallace-Rose Hill in a game that went from the regular period into two 10-minute overtimes. The end result a hard-fought tie between the Sampson and Duplin teams.

“It was a wonderful game,” said an elated coach Allan McLamb after the game. “They played as good as they’ve ever played tonight. They played like I knew they were capable of playing.”

The Raiders came out playing tight and hard in the first half, with solid play from the start.

The ‘Dogs got on the board first, but Midway would not be denied, coming back with a Jimmy Blackmon to Faustino Espino goal to knot the game at 1.

Then Midway’s Javier Castro found Jonathan Garcia, who put the ball in the net and Midway up by 1.

Wallace returned the favor, scoring another before the break, tying it up at 2.

Then, 13 minutes into the second period Blackmon found Castro, and Midway was up 3-2.

With a less than seven minutes left in the match, the Bulldogs tied it up for the third time and the regular period ended with the team’s knotted at 3, bringing on the overtime period.

The two 10-minute OTs was a battle to the end, with neither team giving an inch and the final a tie.

“This was a very physical, complete game,” McLamb said. “My guys gave it everything they had. They played with heart, they played with determination and they played as smart as I’ve seen them play all year.

“I knew what they were capable of, but tonight against Wallace, they stepped it up and proved to themselves what they are capable of.”

Midway moves to 3-1-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in conference play.

They travel to Rosewood Thursday for a 7 p.m. non-conference game, then face county rival Lakewood on Monday at 5 p.m.
