A lot of time has passed since I saw my first Major League baseball game at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, Md. on June 23, 1964.
I have met a lot of baseball players, managers, scouts and others associated with that game since that time, but none stand out like Earl Weaver, No. 4, of Baltimore. He was in a class by himself, a great manager and a really good person, someone I greatly admired.
One of his most famous quotes was, “let’s win today and worry about tomorrow tomorrow.” I always remember that quote and the meaning it held, not just for me but for all those who were fortunate enough to hear him say those words.
Baseball has lost a true icon.
I encourage his family to hold their heads up and continue to hold onto God’s unchanging hands. Old Earl is safe at home today, and he has left many, many memories for those of us who knew or met him to cherish.
Yours in baseball
