Sampson County Parks and Recreation hosted the Eastern Region SWAC (State Wide Athletic Committee) Sectional for 12U fast pitch softball at the Western District Park in Roseboro. Teams participating in this tournament were Sampson County, Clinton City, Jacksonville, Scotland County, Onslow County, and Bladen County. Despite storms, rain, and having to push back games to start on Saturday rather than Friday, the tournament was a success, rec officials said. Roseboro Mayor David Alexander threw out the first pitch of the day, starting the tournament.

The first pair of games featured Sampson County playing Jacksonville in which Sampson County brought in the win, 5-1, and Bladen County playing Clinton City with Bladen winning 14-5. The second pair of games show cased Scotland County and Sampson County with Sampson County winning 21-0 and Bladen County playing Onslow County with Onslow winning 9-3. Even with cloud coverage, moments of rain, and thunder in the distance, the girls kept pushing to finish out the day. The third pair of games had Clinton City playing Scotland County with Clinton winning 5-2, sending Scotland County home and Jacksonville playing Bladen County with Bladen winning 13-3, sending Jacksonville home. Tired, hot, and ready to end the day, the girls had to finish their last games of the day. The final pair of games for the day had Sampson County playing Onslow County with Onslow winning 8-0 and Clinton City playing Bladen County with Bladen winning 10-0 sending Clinton City home.

Day two of the tournament kicked off with Sampson County and Bladen County, who were fighting their way out of the consolation bracket to get to Onslow County for the championship game. In the first inning, both teams came out ready to take the win both scoring two runs. In the second inning, Sampson County came out on top, scoring one more run to set the score at 3-2. However, Bladen came back with vengeance in the third inning taking the lead by scoring four runs to Sampson’s one, making the score 6-4. Bladen County continued with the momentum scoring three more runs, making the ending score 9-4.

In the championship game the Onslow County All Stars went up against Bladen Countys All Stars. The first inning for both teams was a “three-up, three-down” battle with no one scoring. The second and third inning, bats started waking up with Onslow County bringing in one run in the second and four runs in the third. In the fourth inning, Bladen County started fighting back bringing in three runs in which Onslow answered back with two, making the score 7-3. Onslow kept up the scoring facade with two more runs in the 5th inning with Bladen County struggling to move their base runners to home plate. In the end, Bladen County rallied back with two runs in the sixth inning making the ending score 9-5 in Onslow County’s favor. Onslow County All Stars were named Eastern Region Sectional Champions and Bladen County’s All Stars were named Eastern Region Sectional Runner-Ups. Both teams will advance to the SWAC State Championship which will be hosted by Jacksonville Recreation and Parks on Saturday, July 28 through Sunday, July 29.

Sampson County Parks and Recreation would like to thank all the teams that participated for their hard work and cooperation during this tournament and we wish the teams advancing to the State Tournament good luck, county rec staff noted.
