Super Storm Sandy has taken a lot away from our neighbors up North. It has taken food, shelter, electricity, peace of mind, and even lives. It is evident that this hurricane that struck New York and New Jersey in the latter part of October has made it very difficult for people to eat, much less to even think about buying their children something for Christmas. Think about it; waking up Christmas morning as a child not having any toys or gifts. Think about how awful a parent would feel if they could not provide that gift to their child.
You may think there is nothing we can do here in Sampson County, but the members of Freedom Baptist Church have something different in mind.
Freedom Baptist Church, located at 2099 Tyndall Bridge Road in Salemburg, is heading up a Food and Children’s Christmas Gift Drive for Hurricane Sandy victims. All are invited to participate. “We are looking for non-perishable foods, such as canned foods, box dinners, pasta, water, juices, baby items, etc” said Doug Creeger, member of Freedom Baptist. As far as the gifts go, games, stuffed animals, books, and any children’s toy that does not associate with violence in any way are being accepted. Nothing containing glass is permitted either.
Church organizers say they hope that this drive will allow the victims to see the goodness of God’s love.
“The members of the church just wanted to do something to help our brothers up North” continued Creeger. “Our hope is to make sure that someone doesn’t go without a meal, and a child doesn’t go without a Christmas present.”
Allen Goodrich and Caleb Eddy, two teenagers that attend Freedom, both said they could not imagine what it what be like to wake up Christmas morning without gifts under the tree, much less go without a meal. And that is one of the reasons they’ve opted to help out with the drive.
The drive’s dropoff date will be Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Fann Farms, 1379 Tyndall Bridge Road, Salemburg.

A team from the church and surrounding churches will depart on Dec. 14 to take the items to New York.
So this week when you’re out shopping for your child or grandchild, niece, or nephew, or just making a trip to the grocery store, put a little something extra in your shopping cart. You never know how big of a difference it could make in one’s life if they get the can of soup you purchased, or the impact ou could have on a child’s life by just purchasing a $5 to $10 toy to send to New York, If you were in their situation, wouldn’t you want somebody looking out for you? Please be in much prayer about the food and toy drive, and get out there and make a difference!
