Before the students headed to their colleges, The Simple Gifts Fund held its first scholars dinner at Ribeye’s in Clinton on Sunday Aug. 5. Rising college sophomores and rising college freshmen scholarship recipients were excited to discuss their plans for the coming semester.
Sophomore students attending were Connor Day at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., Camille Carr at Furman University in Greenville, SC and Kelly Johnson at Emory and Henry College in Emory, Va. Two of the new freshman scholars are also headed to college in the mountains of Virginia. Laura Patlan will be attending Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar and Festus Turlington will be Washington and Lee University in Lexington. Harrison Butler is bound for Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. Wofford is the home of the Carolina Panthers training camp. Brooks Barwick will be off to Kenyon College, a school known for its distinguished literary tradition in Gambier, Ohio. The 2012 scholars enjoyed visiting with the 2011 scholars, discussing roommates, studying abroad, college majors, and other college experiences.
This fall The Sampson Independent will be running articles in the Wednesday paper from the Simple Gifts Fund about important college admissions issues. Also, each month one of our scholars will write a feature story about their college and their college experiences.
As an added bonus, look for articles from our educators that participated in the Summer Simple Gifts Fund Teacher Fellowship Grant program. The Simple Gifts Fund supported educator programs in England, Korea & Australia this summer.
The fund is launching a new program this fall called the Love of Learning Grant program for educators in Sampson County so look for more information about this new opportunity in “The Sampson Independent.” The Simple Gifts Fund is adding graduates from Sampson Community College (SCC) to the pool of those eligible to apply for the Simple Gifts Fund Scholarship. Individuals with SCC associate degrees who graduate in the top 25 percent and graduated from a high school in Sampson County are eligible to apply for this exceptional scholarship. Margaret Turlington will be presenting information on the scholarship program to students in the College Transfer Success classes.
