Union Middle traveled to Hobbton Middle Thursday and went home with wins in both baseball and softball on a cold, windy afternoon. The baseball final was 11-9.
The baseball score stayed closed until the top of the 6th when Union turned on the bats.
Wildcat coach Chuck Lively said, “It was a close game all the way. The game was tied at 6 each. Then we went up 7-6. Union then scored 5 in top of the 6th inning. We scored 2 in the bottom frame and then we ran out of time.”
For the Wildcats, Gabe Herring was 3-4, Russ Ratley was 2-3 with a base on balls, Todd Meyer was 2-4, Chris Watkins was 2-4 and finishing up was Will Simmons with 1-2.
Union Middle stats were not available.
Softball
Despite a 5-1 win by the Lady Spartans, the game seemed a lot closer than the score indicated.
“Errors killed us,” Hobbton coach Pat Bowden explained.
Hobbton scored their only run in the first inning on a steal home by Alona Rhodes who also walked twice. Megan Parker was 1-3, Meredith Norris was 1-3, Denise Lamb went 1-3 and Summer French was 1-3. MaKenzie Williams pitched the whole game with 10 strike-outs.
Union scored 2 runs in the second, 2 runs in the fourth and 1 in the sixth. Other stats for Union were unavailable.
Next week, the Wildcats travel to Midway Middle on Tuesday while Union will host Roseboro-Salemburg.
