The Union Middle School football team delivered a solid performance in their first game of the season Thursday night against the Hobbton Wildcats, picking up a 30-14 victory.

“I told the guys after the game, it is a good way to start a season,” noted Spartan head coach Robert Hill.

Hill’s Union team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back behind the powerhouse running of Jamah Chestnutt, who also delivered a solid defensive performance as an end, and fullback Andrew Brunson, who turned in an impressive performance of his own when he wasn’t holding off Wildcats with his blocking efforts in the backfield.

“I think the guys played well on offense,” Hill added, “but really, the entire defensive unit should be commended because they did a great job tonight.”

Despite the score, Hobbton delivered a couple of fine performances in their own right. Frankie Faison scored on a 47-yard touchdown after a pass from quarterback Gage Herring and Herring also scored late in the game on a pretty quarterback keeper.

“We gave up a couple of big plays,” admitted Wildcat head coach Chuck Lively. “And we gave up a lot of turnovers.”

With the win, Union (1-0) will play at Roseboro-Salemburg next week; Hobbton (0-1) will battle the Raiders. Both games begin at 4 p.m.
