Sampson County investigators picked up a Florida fugitive Saturday in Newton Grove , but officiers said it wasn’t an easy arrest.

Acting on an anonymous tip, Florida law enforcement officers contacted officials in Sampson County Friday afternoon, asking them to check a local residence where a fugitive from their state was believed to be.

When authorities went to the residence Friday, Justin Kevin Maraquin, 20, of 660 Rawhide Road, Newton Grove, reportedly ran when he saw deputies. Maraquin, on foot, was able to allude authorities by running into nearby woods.

The next day, deputies returned to the home and again, Maraquin reportedly took off on foot. He was later found hiding under a dining room table in the Rawhide Road residence.

Maraquin was taken into custody and charged with two counts of resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer and being a fugitive from justice.

He was placed in the Sampson County Detention Center and is awaiting extradition to Florida.

“It was good follow-up work by the deputies,” said Sampson County Sheriff’s Department’s Capt. Eric Pope. “He will be in jail for a while until they come get him.”

According to the Florida Department of Corrections, a warrant for his arrest was issued on June 30. Maraquin has a history of convictions in the state. Some of those charges include credit card fraud, grand theft, traffiking in stolen property, forgery/uttering and uttering forged bills.
