Sampson County’s Board of Education has a new chairman and vice chairman after a vote Wednesday night, however, before he handed over the gavel to Telfair Simpson, outgoing chairman G.H. Wilson delivered some heartfelt comments to the board.

“I would like to say thank you to the board for allowing me to serve as chairman over the past two years,” he said. “I have enjoyed it immensely and I thought that we all worked together well.”

Wilson added that he tried not to “embarrass” the board during his tenure at the helm. “I think this board has a lot to be proud of,” he said. “For years and years it has been tough with our budgets … and this year, we are doing some things like giving a our teachers a 1 percent supplement, restoring some of our teacher aides and just doing some things that we haven’t been able to do.”

He ended his speech to the board by saying how proud he was to be part of it, as well as the system. “I think we have done things that we can be proud of. I am certainly proud to have been chairman and I really do enjoy it.”

With that, Superintendent Dr. Ethan Lenker opened the floor to nominations for a new chairman.

Without hesitation, board member Glenn Tart made the motion for Telfair Simpson.

“Mr. Simpson has been nominated. Do we have any other nominations?” Lenker asked the board, excluding Mary Brown, who was out of the state on vacation.

Wilson made the motion to close the voting and have Simpson appointed by acclamation. The board agreed and with that, Wilson handed the gavel over to the new chairman.

Simpson pounded the gavel and thanked the board, as well as Wilson.

“I appreciate the vote of confidence,” he said, before turning directly to Wilson. “G.H. I would just like to take this opportunity to say that you have done an outstanding job over the last two years. This board has run very smoothly and you put a lot of time and effort into being chairman and we all appreciate it.”

Lenker moved on to take nominations for vice chairman.

Board member Dewain Sinclair told Lenker that he wanted to nominate Faye Gay.

With no other nominations, the board voted unanimously to vote in Gay.

“I too would like to thank Mr. Wilson for all that he has done over the past two years,” Gay said. “I just really appreciate it.”

Sellers moved to coordinator

Later in the meeting, the board moved to approve the promotion of Lakewood High School assistant principal Shajuanna Sellers to replace Henry Stumpf as Alternative Program Coordinator.

The move was effective July 23, but approved by the board Wednesday night.

A replacement for Sellers at Lakewood High has not been named.
