A 55-year-old Sampson County woman remained in serious condition at the UNC Burn Center Monday suffering from injuries she sustained in an early Sunday morning fire at her home.

According to Sampson sheriff’s reports, Margaret Gaona of 756 Wiggins Road sustained major burns in the incident, reported to authorities around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Officials at UNC Hospitals confirmed Gaona’s condition was serious but could not provide additional information on how badly she was burned or where those burns were on her body.

Even as the 55-year-old is being treated for her injuries, fire officials in Sampson are continuing their probe into what caused the fire, said to have been contained to Gaona’s bedroom.

Firefighters and EMS personnel were called to the Wiggins Road residence in the wee hours of Sunday morning after a caller reported the fire to dispatchers and explained that someone was still inside.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they immediately went in the residence, found Gaona, removed her from the home and extinguished the blaze.

Gaona’s daughter, who reportedly lives in the double-wide mobile home with her mother, called authorities after she was awakened by smoke alarms and was unable to get her mother out of the bedroom because of heavy smoke in the residence.

Firefighters from Halls, Clinton and Herring responded to the blaze.

“We were able to get Mrs. Margaret out quickly and extinguish the fire,” said Prentice Madgar, deputy fire marshal for Sampson County.

She was transported to Wake Medical Center for treatment and then transferred to UNC’s Burn Center.

Madgar said it was not yet known what caused the fire.

“That is still under investigation and I’m not sure when we will have those findings,” he said.
