ROSEBORO — Two of four teenagers involved in a Saturday night wreck on Harmony Church Road remain hospitalized this morning, one in stable condition the other still serious.

Two girls, one the driver, Alexandria Vreugdenhil, 16, of Clinton, and her front seat passenger, Alissa Kornegay, 16, of Clinton, were reportedly shaken up but not seriously injured in the one-vehicle accident.

The young men — Josh King, 18, of Faison and Jeremiah Davis, 17, of Newton Grove, were back seat passengers and, according to N.C. Highway Patrol reports, were in the area of the vehicle where the most impact occurred.

According to Trooper J.L. Murphy, the wreck happened around 10:12 p.m. Saturday evening near the intersection of Bass Lake Road when Vreugdenhil’s 2009 Nissan, traveling east, went off the right side of the roadway.

Murphy said the driver overcorrected, sending the vehicle left of the center lane.

“It apparently got away from her and slid off the right side of the road and down an embankment,” Murphy said, adding that the vehicle then struck a piece of farm equipment, a disc, which was hooked behind a tractor.

When the vehicle struck the disc, the trooper said, it then traveled another 25 feet. The greatest impact was to the vehicle’s rear, where King and Davis were sitting. “It struck right in the passenger side,” Murphy said.

Both King and Davis were airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Neither Vreugdenhil nor Kornegay were transported by rescue for injuries.

Davis was listed in stable condition; King's condition was upgraded to serious at the Chapel Hill hospital.

Murphy said he charged the driver with a license restriction violation as well as careless and reckless driving.

I have an announcement. We can finally put this whole thing to rest. Sherry Matthews has spoken.

Sherry Matthews, Editor

The Sampson Independent September 9, 2009.

"Our children should be taught, as we were, that rules are put in place for a reason. And that because we live in America, if we don’t like those rules, for whatever reason, we have channels by which we can attempt to have them changed. Breaking the rules should not be one of those channels".

Thank you, Sherry. I can hope the healing process will begin. To all the supporters of Alex, thank you. You did your best, but the end people should and will be held responsible for this accident.

Again, thank you, Sherry. Why you didn'y print this stunning revelation earlier is beyond me. I guess it was an oversight.

dhorses,

I thought your community was holding a candle light service for Alex while those two MEN were forgotten in the hospital.

No, I have no life. I'm a school yard bully. I am pathetic. Did I miss anything?

Nope. Do you have nothing better to do than sit around all day reading a small newspaper's blog? Seriously.

Do you guys not have anything better to do than sit around all day and trash people on a small newspaper's blog? Seriously.

LOL, SIStrumpet, that is very funny....and very true.

Alex please don't take dhorses advice. You can't drive at the legal speed limit much less godspeed.

Victims? How about violators or maybe offenders?

Sympathy for who? Alex? How about we stop the "poor Alex" song. We, "the commoners", get it. I know there would not be the amount of out pouring for anyone of lesser social standing. So, let's stop this ridiculous ass kissing session for the Vreugdenhil family. It's obvious from the majority of comments on here several people were at fault.

Once the fines are paid off, the insurance company pays out the medical expenses and Alex is given a 2010 vehicle, all will be right with the world.

This is not a time for cynical remarks, this is a time for sympathy. Can we refrain from crude accusations and denouncing a family for long enough to realize that two young men are in critical condition, and that there is no one on the face of God's green Earth that feels any worse for them than Alex. So have a little human decency and instead of constructing a clever comeback for this comment, go construct a prayer for the families of the four victims here. If you were in their positions you know you would need all the help you could receive. Godspeed, Alex.

Why has this article been removed from the news page?

This story isn't about me, so projecting the issues of imperfections about me is useless. Stick to the topic. Teen driver wrecks car. Not SI poster, lafus, states something I didn't like. I'll call him stupid and ignorant, but I have no facts saying he's wrong. That is an over played tactic in Sampson County.

There is so much stuff I've done it would make a sailor in Bangkok blush. I never said I was perfect, just pointing out the obvious.

O.k., no one is casting stones here. We are simply stating the obvious. She broke the law. She needs to be punished. She is also a minor, so her parents should be held accountable as well. No one is being self righteous. If I speed, write me a ticket. If I steal, send me to jail. If I nearly kill two of my friends by breaking the law, take my license away and hold me responsible! I wouldn't expect them to treat me any different than they would a murderer. But we all know, nothing will come of this. It will get swept under the rug. Considering who her parents are. Which is why she probably thinks she is above the law anyways, or she wouldn't have broke it.

I have to say, you guys defending law breakers would make great criminal lawyers!

lafus...what is wrong with this generation is a lot more than what you think. I just know that finding fault with other people is wrong when I am sure you have plenty of faults yourself. I know a lot of people but I cannot think of one person that is perfect.

LS2001? That's a pretty old car. Kinda old and old model for the socialite crowd.

For several days I have been reading these comments.I see a lot of jealousy written between the lines, also a lot of self righteouness.

Jesus told the accusers of the woman caught in adultery to cast the first stone if they had not sinned. You know what they did?THEY LEFT,

If there is anybody reading this ADULT OR TEENAGER who drives a car and you have NEVER,EVER broken the law in any way or if you are a parent of a teenager that has never disobeyed you at any time please comment.i WOULD LOVE TO SEE WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY.

As for Alex I'm sure she has and will suffer for years to come because of this mistake.

As for me my heart goes out to her and the others and their families. I am thankful to the Good Lord above that it wasn't any worse than it was.

No one hear is JEALOUS of Alex. I'm certainly not jealous that she had an accident that nearly killed 2 people. I'm not jealous that she was trying to help out a friend. AND I'm not jealous that she violated a restricted license law. If any one is JEALOUS LS2001, it is you, because she is getting more attention that you are!

I am sure that acronym was Love Ms Alex Overly. After all, Lafus loves everyone. The only punishment that will be handed down here is a fine and court cost for the ticket. The most powerful, crooked attorney in Clinton's fee to have the careless and wreckless reduced to improper equipment because her car's auto pilot wasn't working properly. Higher insurance rates...if that's possible on a 16 yr old and another new car(sorry Dad, one less fishing trip for you). I'm sure the DA is already scurrying to figure out how he can justify reducing all these to a simple jaywalking charge. Let's see how all this plays out. And yes, I am thankful everyone walked away so don't even go there.
« LS2001 wrote on Wednesday, Sep 02 at 09:42 AM »
I can assure you that there is LOTS of love for Alex and everyone else that was involved in this accident. It sounds like to me we are dealing with a serious case of JEALOUSY...because Alex is such a great kid. It is extremely heartbreaking that so many of you would be so quick to judge her. Yes, she broke the law and I'm sure she will receive the proper punishment, and she should!! - but "Laughing your "A" off" only shows your immaturity in this whole situation. Just remember one thing, "you will reap what you sow."

I guess there's just no love for Alex. LMAO
