Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Sheriff Jimmy Thornton and the Sampson County Sheriff's Department, the SBI, the DEA, the National Guard and Clinton police helped uncover four fields of marijuana Wednesday. In addition to the 11,000 pot plants, officers uncovered a campsite and a complex irrigation system apparently used to water the plants.(Photos by Doug Clark)

INGOLD — Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton tracks back through at least an acre and a half of land just off of Wright Bridge Road and looks through a bag of plumbing fixtures buried deep behind a make-shift camp. It’s full of garbage.

“This is some living, huh?” Thornton says as he puts the bag down and looks over unused food that is sitting under a canvas cover.

Working off tips from residents in the area and in association with the annual Drug Eradication Day, agencies came together to uncover no less than four sites that were growing marijuana in the area, the biggest one being about a mile off U.S. Highway 701 and just north of Garland.

In total, 11,000 plants, some that grew to be 3 to 5 feet high, were seized. Estimated street value, officers said, $27 million. No arrests have been made.

“We estimate it at least $2,500 a plant,” said Thornton. “And I will tell you something, it is great that these drugs won’t get in the hands of our children. What is the grower’s loss, is a certain future for our children.”

In addition to the Sampson County Sheriff’s Department, the Criminal Interdiction Unit, investigators with the Clinton Police Department, the H.E.A.T. Unit (Highway Enforcement Awareness Team), the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), investigators with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the National Guard, Sampson County detectives and even county Student Resource Officers were on hand to help out. The North Carolina Forestry Service was also called upon to dig out trees that led back deep in the woods to where growers built a complex irrigation system — hence the bag of plumbing fixtures — on at least an acre and a half of land.

“You can see, these guys knew what they were doing,” said Thornton. “They ran lines from a well they built and covered up the pump that got water from a pond. They even took the time to paint some of the pipes green so it couldn’t be seen from above.”

But that all changed when helicopters patrolled the area Wednesday and uncovered the plants.

“There were also three more sites — one across the street, and two others down the road a bit,” said Thornton. “But this one was the biggest.”

Thornton estimated that there were at least 8-10 people involved with growing the plants, with at least three of them staying on the site.

“They had a place where they cleaned off, ate and slept,” he said as he picked through a tent. “You can see right here, they even had a battery where they had a cell phone charger on it. They had to be out here at least two months, easy.”

The landowner, who was not connected to the growers, was also contacted by Thornton.

“People need to be aware of what is going on,” he said. “If you see people running out of the woods by your house and you don’t know who they are, call us and report it. We will come out and check it out ... Everybody needs to be aware of what is going on around them and be mindful of their property.”

And Thornton promises that whoever is involved with growing the plants will be brought to justice.

“We are aggressively searching for the people involved with this,” he said. “We want the public to get involved — if someone out there knows anyone who may be involved with this, give us a call.”

Yougotit and JAFS just don't get it. Maybe one day he will get it, right in his piehole and have to call an officer to help him. No one would be good enough to help him though, I'm sure. It seems he always has to say something negitive about the Sheriff's office.

JAFS, I was actually attempting to point out the fact that as usual the discussions involving the sheriff's department never involve the actual criminals. First comment was about the HEAT which stands for highway enforcement awareness team not "high enforcing air traffic".

yougotit, You went around you elbow to say that the sheriff's department was just there to help carry the plants and that hopefully they would not smoke it up... Or at least that's the way I read it. I think the sheriff's office is a professional organization which should not be subject to your jealous accusations which are not substantiated. We can always agree to disagree though...

Furthermore, I wouldn't attempt to correct errors in anyone's comments due to my own carelessness when it comes to grammar. My comment was about the comments others made because bobbuilder spelled plane wrong.

You go tit

Apparently you need to utilize the information listed below. I was defending you by copying and pasting what averagejoe wrote and telling her that if she's going to point out the mistakes of others she needs to make sure her own writing is error free. She used their when it should have been they're. I can see you're trying to fall into the same category as the rest of the nonthinkers on here by using insults and name calling instead of relying on your intellectual skills to generate a lucid rebuttal. Geez...you can't even be nice on here!

So the sheriff's office gets no credit by yougotit whom is an idiot. Bobthebuilder gives credit where due but just cant spell. lafe_crick or prick says their going to smoke it. (Just the HEAT unit though)

If we are going to point out the mistakes of others then make sure you're perfect yourself!

It's they're not their.

Averagejoe, before you make comments you need to go back and re-read what I wrote, I said thanks to everybody and all agencies not just the Sheriff Office. Maybe you have smoked to much marijuana in your life time. You must be a Deputy Sheriff yourself or you would like to become one. So who's the idiot now ????????

That's pretty much it, joe. Actually, I'm impressed with the Pot King pins. Large scale operation. Very good in what they did and how they did it. Maybe we should vote the entire county commissioners, fire moorefield, and hire these guys. Hey, what they do isn't pretty or right, but, My God, they're efficient. It's more than I can say for our " proud elected officials".

AverageJoe, that's me, says thanks to all involved for doing a professional job and not listening to any of these "douchenozzles" who know absolutely everything about absolutely nothing. Now don't get all out of sorts, nobody says that you are dumb. They just say you were sixteen years old before you learned how to wave goodbye. But that's just an averagejoe for you, always standing up for the good guys not the self made men whom worship their creators...

Yes, marijuana was sized located by an airplane or someone got pissed off that they were not going to get there cut. Well let’s start off saying thanks for everybody’s help not just saying thanks to the Sheriff Office. The DEA, and SBI and other agencies knows what they are doing they just needed a little help on caring those pot plants. Well most likely there are more marijuana fields out there, it is growing season. The drug dealers do have a green thumb and money grows on trees. Well I hope those plants were not taken to the Sheriff Office drug warehouse we no how the drugs were secure last time a deputy was caught smoking crack on video.

By the way, bob, Sampson County is the largest county land wise, but not border wise. Check your handy-dany ACME NC Map.

If Thornton thinks he is going to find the ones in charge of this operation, he's sadly mistaken. It was well funded and well connected. You better just write this off as some sort of HEAT training session. By the way, if any of your HEAT cronies rush to volunteer to burn this stuff, I would think about stepping up the UA testing more randomly. Just saying...

Not sure what a "private plain" or that you "loaned a plain" is all about, but I'll look it up.

I am not an English Professor but I think the spelling should be PLANE and not PLAIN
« bobthebuilder wrote on Thursday, Jun 25 at 12:58 PM »
Let me correct myself. I meant to say don't know in my last posting. I'm sure we have some english majors proof reading this.

Not questioning your intelligence but you do realize that Sampson county is the largest county in the state and over 960 square miles. I'm sure these guys don't make it a habit of walking through the woods on a daily basis. With a county this big it would seem that finding something like that would be like searching for a needle in a hay stack. Also not know how familiar you are with the county's budget situation but they're broke, so I doubt they have the funds to own their on plane. A private plain, hmmm. Don't think I would loan my plain out to be used like that. Maybe you haven't bought gas lately either! Good job Sheriff deputies. Keep up the good work.

With all the private airplanes flying overhead in this area, why did it take so long for the "HEAT" to intervene? Just saying..
