A Hobbton Middle School student is fighting for her life and her father is dead following an incident on Hunter Road Friday night. Sheriff’s investigators believe this is an isolated incident involving that family and not related to other crimes that have occurred in the county recently.

Investigators would not release the names of the victims, noting that a probe was still under way and all family members had not been contacted about the incident.

Officers were called to 77 Hunter Road, north of Clinton, around 7 p.m. Friday regarding an unknown situation called in to the E911 Center, but before they arrived, deputies were told that the caller had left the scene with an injured person.

An ambulance, also responding to the scene, was flagged down on U.S. 701 by the 13-year-old’s brother who had gone to the Hunter Road residence and found his father dead and his sister slumped over, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He immediately called 911 and then put his sister in his vehicle to transport her, stopping only when he saw the ambulance.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a 51-year-old man dead from what they believe was likely a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Investigators are still processing physical evidence collected and are awaiting results from the medical examiner, however preliminary findings indicate that the father may have taken his own life,” Sheriff’s Capt. Eric Pope said in a prepared statement.

“The circumstances surrounding the shooting of the 13-year-old are still under investigation and she is currently in critical condition at a regional medical facility.

Pope stressed that investigators believe the incident was isolated to the father and daughter and in no way related to any other criminal activity that has occurred in recent weeks.
