After falling to Rosewood at home on Monday, the Raiders had a quick turn around in a trip to North Johnston on Tuesday. The Raiders struggled early, but defeated the Panthers 57-47.
Midway had one source of offense in the opening period, and that was Quincy Baggett. Baggett converted on a turn-around hook shot for the game’s first hoop, then finished off an alley-oop play nicely. After a Baggett put-back, the Raiders and the Panthers were knotted at 6 after the first quarter.
The Raiders fell behind entering the halftime locker room after North Johnston used an 8-2 run to end the half, and take a 20-18 lead. However, the Raiders came out fiesty in the second half. Defense led to offense after Andre Sankey picked up a loose ball and took it the length of the floor for a layup and the foul. Moments later, Baggett knocked down a turn-around jumper, and Tyler Pope scored and got fouled after an offensive rebound. This capped off a 13-0 run for the Raiders, and gave them a 33-22 lead. The Panthers answered this with a run of their own, and with one quarter to play, Midway had a 37-33 lead.
The Raiders owned the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. Justin Thompson drove the lane agressively and got fouled on four different possessions in the final period. Thompson knocked down 7-8 free throws in the quarter, and finished with 9 points in the game. Midway’s 12-14 free throw clinic in the fourth quarter helped them ice the game, and hold on to win by ten.
Quincy Baggett was the big story for the Raiders Tuesday evening. Baggett Scored 21 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and blocked six shots.
“We really wanted to establish our inside presence tonight with Quincy, and I think we did a good job of that early” said Midway’s head coach Leonard Henry. “I’m pleased overall with our effort tonight and proud of the guys, we’ll take a win any night” concluded Henry.
Midway takes its 4-4 record to Trask next Tuesday to begin conference play.
