Union’s varsity Spartans won a heart-stopper Friday night, defeating Trask on the road 65-63, with Damarius Davis scoring off an offensive rebound with two seconds left to get the victory.

The Samspon team took the early 13-6 first-quarter lead, but Trask would not go away, fighting back in the second quarter to close the half behind by only 28-26.

But Union worked hard to maintain their lead despite rallies by Trask in the third and fourth quarter.

“We were finally able to get some shots to fall tonight, and we needed everyone of them,” said coach Tim Pope of his varsity Spartans.

“Desmond Faison was really big for us on the defensive end tonight. He guarded Rasheed Brown all night and made him earn each of the 25 points he scored. Rasheed is one of the better offensive players around and you have to work really hard or he will score 40 on you.

Pope also said Spartan Natrone Banks was big from the free throw line, going 7 for 9 down the stretch to keep Union with a little lead.

Banks led scoring Friday night, with 22 points; Davis had 10 and Brandon Lovett added 13.

The win moves the Spartan record to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Union’s next game is against county rival Midway Thursday night during the “Red Out” game.
