A Newton Grove woman and a Roseboro man became the latest Sampson residents jailed courtesy of a six-month undercover operation targeting the sale and distribution of drugs across the county.

Dubbed Operation Scarecrow, the campaign placed undercover Special Investigations Division agents in positions where suspected drug dealers either bought, sold — or both — drugs. Citizen complaints brought about the campaign now culminating in the issuing of warrants and the arrest of residents across Sampson.

Scarecrow, sheriff’s officials have said, did not target a specific area of the county but rather focused on Sampson as a whole, drawing out those believed to be participants in illegal drug activity.

Sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith has said dozens are likely to be arrested in the campaign. So far, 11 have been taken into custody on charges ranging from trafficking in cocaine to the sell and delivery of cocaine, meth and marijuana.

Reports show the 10th and 11th suspects jailed in connection with Scarecrow were arrested Oct. 5 and Oct. 8.

Kimberly Dawn Garason, 40, of 3974 Alex Benton Road, Newton Grove, was charged Tuesday with 1 count of selling methamphetamine and 1 count of delivery of methamphetamine. Her bond was set at $15,000 and her first court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 12.

Three days earlier, on Oct. 5, Monteno Montrelle Tatum, 33, of 33 Marion Amos Road, Roseboro, was taken into custody and now faces 1 count of sell of cocaine; 1 count delivery of cocaine; and 1 count maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for the storage of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $7,000 and his first court appearance is slated for Oct. 26.

Over the weekend, SID agents rounded up seven suspects involved in Scarecrow, including: Brandon Jahid Lewis, 22, 148 Greentree Lane, Clinton; Deron C. McIntyre, 22, 72 Capers Walk, Clinton; Terrence Lee Faison, 35, 34 Gill Lane, Clinton; Donnie Hooks, 49, 17 Harper St., Clinton; Matthew Joyner, 45, 93 Harper St., Clinton; Derrick Cornelius Conley, 25, 140 Rainbow Lane, Roseboro; and Tyronne Gerald Bailey, 26, 225 Brantwood Court, Roseboro.

In addition, Michael Rajohn Jackson, 28, of 655 Maynard Road, Godwin, and Kevin Jacobs, 43, 494 Carroll Store Road, Autryville, were the first two taken into custody courtesy of the undercover campaign.

Charges for the nine suspects ranged from trafficking in cocaine and opium to the sell and delivery of cocaine, meth and opium. Bonds ranged from $300,000 to the lowest amount set at $7,000.
