The man who allegedly shot at a homeowner and led police on a lengthy, high-speed car chase Friday is now facing a whopping 18 charges after being linked to another break-in in the same neighborhood the previous day.
Joshua Emanuel Smith, 25, of 1333 Isaac Weeks, Road, Clinton, was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill; discharging a weapon into occupied property; two counts of breaking and entering; two counts of felony larceny; two counts of possession of stolen property; two counts of possession of firearm by felon; fleeing to elude arrest; two counts of hit and run/leaving the scene of an accident; and two counts of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Smith was placed under a $175,000 bond, with a first court appearance scheduled for Aug. 17 in Clinton.
According to reports, Smith allegedly broke into a home located in the 1000 block of Bowden Road Friday. When the homeowner reportedly came home for lunch, she witnessed the suspect, who was still on the scene, run from her home and get into a white Nissan Altima, driving off. The homeowner attempted to follow the suspect to get a license plate number, however Smith allegedly shot at her.
As he approached Pine Ridge Road, a deputy intercepted the vehicle and pulled him over, calling for back-up. When the back-up cruiser arrived, Smith floored the accelerator and took off once again, heading toward N.C. Hwy. 403, with deputies in pursuit.
Officers with the Clinton Police Department put out stop sticks near N.C. Hwy. 403 and Pugh Road, but Smith avoided the sticks and continued into the city.
The suspect continued to lead officers down College Street, where he lost control of the vehicle and drove up an embankment at the intersection of Graham and College streets.
He took off on foot and was eventually arrested after being tackled by officers behind First Baptist Church, 900 College St.
No injuries were reported in the incident and a gun was recovered from the vehicle after Smith’s arrest.
During Friday’s investigation, the suspect was linked to another residential break-in that took place Thursday at a residence just down the road — at 1016 Bowden Road.
Reported stolen was a bag of assorted change valued at $400; a digital camera valued at $500; two game systems, valued at $275; a 55-inch television, valued at $800; a pioneer surround sound system, valued at $300; a cable bo,x valued at $200; a bolt action hunting rifle, valued at $1,000; a 12-gauge shotgun valued at $300; an electric guitar valued at $900; and assorted jewelry valued at $1,500.
The homeowner also reported damage to the back door, estimated at $500 ,and a television entertainment stand, valued at $300.
