A Sampson County Animal Control investigation is ongoing in connection with an animal cruelty case that has already claimed the life of a canine.

Investigators with the department were called to a residence on Hunt Lane, located off of Rowan Road, southeast of Clinton, after a tip from a concerned citizen alleged that the animals at the residence were being deprived of food, water, shelter and medical attention.

When officers arrived on scene around 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, they immediately witnessed three pit bull dogs, all on heavy chains, in the yard. Reports show that one of the dogs was extremely emaciated; another one was severely underweight; a third one was struggling to get his chain untangled from a wood block that was preventing him from getting to shelter; and a fourth dog was found lying dead on the property.

Although there food and water bowls were in the yard, the dogs could not get to them, reports noted, and even if they could, the bowls were empty.

When the investigators knocked on the door of the home, the 46-year-old resident was inside and answered. She was promptly asked about the condition of the animals and was surprised to learn one of the dogs was already dead, reports showed.

The woman voluntarily surrendered the emaciated pit bull to Sampson County Animal Control and was given a warning to provide proper shelter, food, water and medical care to the remaining animals in the yard.

Sampson County Animal Control officials said the case is still open and if the woman does not adhere to the conditions, she could be charged.
