Earlier this month, the Union High School JROTC drill team competed in the 2nd annual Justin Spears Invitational Drill Meet at Triton High School and won the overall trophy.
The team performed well in all of the events which included squad armed and unarmed competitions, platoon armed and unarmed competitions, a color guard competition, and an unarmed exhibition competition. Their high-scoring wins in these individual competitions led to them being named the overall winners.
Sgt. Maj. Steve L. Jones of Triton High School visited the Union High School JROTC drill team Thursday, Nov. 29 and presented them with their trophy. He spoke to them about the importance of JROTC and how they can do great things if they press on and don’t give up.
Jones spoke fondly of the recent drill meet saying,”It’s such an honor for these two schools that are so close to spend time together. The brotherhood of JROTC lives on,” he stressed.
Jones added that he knew Union’s win was special for Sgt. Maj. Al McKoy, coach of the Union High School JROTC drill team, since they won at McKoy’s high school.
“I’m certainly proud of what they’ve accomplished,” attests McKoy. “I push them to the limit to win. I expect them to win every time we go to compete, and they’ve done very well.”
As pleased as McKoy is, there are probably none prouder than the students themselves. “It is an honor to be a drill team commander, especially of such a good team,” says Rogelio Bonilla, Union High School JROTC drill team leader.
“I consider it a privilege to be in command of such a team as ours and to have the responsibilities that I’m in charge of,” adds Logan Hobbs, executive officer of the Union High School JROTC drill team.
Union High School’s JROTC drill team will compete again Dec. 1, 2012 in the Southview High Drill Meet in Hope Mills.
