A 38-year-old Faison woman has been charged with a felony after a local magistrate found sufficient evidence to charge her with indecent exposure late Friday.
Waleska Maldonado, 38, of 106 Sams Lane, Faison, was charged with indecent exposure, a felony, after having warrants served on her at her home on Friday, Oct. 26, around 10 p.m.
According to reports from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, the complainant went to the magistrate’s office and shared evidence against Maldonalo, accusing her of exposing herself to a child under the age of 16 on Saturday, Oct. 20.
Sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith said Maldonado was brought before magistrate Gene Faircloth Friday, and he went ahead and charged her with the crime.
“It is not the typical way it is done,” Smith said. “Usually, when there is a complaint like that, especially involving a minor, we are called in to investigate … it didn’t happen on this one because the suspect was already charged (before an investigation).”
Smith said the magistrate has the power to charge anyway he wants in any case brought before him.
“I am sure he had a good reason for making the charge,” Smith stresed, “but the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office has no information on this case because the charges were already brought forward, there was no investigation on our part.”
Faircloth could not be reached for comment; he was not in the office on Monday.
Maldonado was given a $4,900 bond and a trial date of Nov. 9.
