A 29-year-old Sampson County woman, just lying down to go to bed Saturday morning, was the victim of an alleged assault after an acquaintance broke into her home demanding his cell phone.
Bobby Bryant, 31, of Clinton, was arrested in connection with the incident that took place Saturday, Sept. 15, around 1:30 a.m. at the woman’s residence, located at 22 Stanbourne Lane, just outside of Clinton.
According to Sampson County sheriff’s reports the woman reported that she was just about to go to sleep when she heard a banging noise coming from her kitchen. She got up and saw the man, later identified as Bryant, standing in her kitchen demanding his cell phone. When the woman told Bryant she didn’t have his cell phone, he allegedly assaulted her and pushed her towards the bathroom area of the home.
After the attack, Bryant allegedly went through the woman’s purse and took an undisclosed amount of cash.
Reports show that after going through the purse, the suspect ran out the front door and into a nearby wooded area. The victim, who suffered minor injuries in the alleged assault, jumped in her vehicle and gave chase. She stopped at the edge of the wooded field and flashed her vehicle’s lights on the area and called police.
Bryant allegedly came out of the woods and attempted to gain entry to the woman’s car but, when he was unsuccessful, took off running once again.
Fifteen minutes later a deputy pulled a vehicle over for a minor traffic violation and Bryant happened to be the passenger. Bryant’s name came back as wanted for failure to appear in court on three charges from earlier this year — communicating threats, making harassing phone calls and cyberstalking — and he was immediately arrested.
He was later charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering and misdemeanor larceny for the incident that took place earlier that morning.
The driver of the vehicle was not charged.
Bryant was placed under a $9,000 secured bond and a trial date of Oct. 16 was set.
According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections, he has a long history of convictions dating back to 1997. Those convictions include numerous felony breaking and enterings.
