The body of a man found dead in a ditch Thursday morning on Brewer Road has been identified as Kim Douglass McKoy Jr., 25, of Rose Hill.

The official word from Sampson County sheriff’s officers is that there was “obvious signs of foul play” involved.

“We are awaiting the official results from the autopsy,” noted Capt. Eric Pope Friday. Due to obvious signs of trauma, the case is being treated as a homicide, he added.

While investigators have been tight-lipped since discovery of the body around 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Sampson County Medical Examiner Dr. F. Carl Barr reported that McKoy had been shot multiple times in the chest and the head.

Dr. Barr had not completed the autopsy Friday, but he did say that from a preliminary exam McKoy appeared to have been shot four times with a medium caliber weapon.

“He was shot twice in the face and twice in the chest,” Dr. Barr said. “All the shots were on his left side.”

Dr. Barr said he will begin bullet retrieval on Saturday.

He also noted that the man had not been out in the elements too long. “There was no deterioration that I could find. I would estimate that he was out there late night (Wednesday) or early morning (Thursday),” the medical examiner said.

Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton did not comment on the condition of McKoy’s body, but did say that it was Lt. Lawrence Dixon who identified the man.

“He took his fingerprints and was able to find a match, which identified him,” the sheriff pointed out. “It was good investigative work.”

Members of the county’s Special Investigations Division, the Criminal Investigations Division and agents from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) worked the scene throughout the day to try and find clues leading up to McKoy’s death.

“My investigators have been working very hard to find out what led to this,” Thornton said. “We won’t stop until we do.”

If you have any information on this case, you are asked to call the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office at 910-592-4141.
