As October rolls on, so do the arrests from Operation Scarecrow, the aptly-dubbed undercover drug campaign initiated by the Sampson County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Division that is now culminating in a litany of arrests across the county.
In a span of just five days, since the initial two arrests were made last Thursday, the number of suspects taken into custody as part of the “Scarecrow” sting has ballooned to 14, with three more arrests made in the northern part of Sampson County Tuesday.
Those arrests were all Godwin-area residents, just the most recent jailed as part of a six-month undercover operation targeting the sale and distribution of drugs across the county.
Deshawn Markiese Drummond, 21, of 1229 Charles Newland Road, Godwin, was charged with one count of selling and delivering cocaine, two counts of selling and delivering marijuana and two counts of trafficking opium. He was arrested at the Charles Newland Road address and placed under $121,000 bond for the charges.
According to reports, another suspect, Tyrone Antoine Joyner, 19, of the same address, was also taken into custody as part of the campaign, however only after he attempted to elude authorities.
When deputies went to serve the warrants, reports state, Joyner fled from agents into a wooded area behind the residence. He was apprehended near Joe Bud Lane and Wrench Road, where he was found in possession of 1.4 grams of marijuana.
Joyner was charged with selling and delivering a counterfeit controlled substance and two counts of selling and delivering cocaine. He was additionally charged with simple possession of marijuana and resist, delay and obstruct and placed under $50,000 bond.
The third arrested Tuesday was Peyton Laverne McBride, 38, of 48 Dodge Lane, Godwin, who was charged with two counts of selling cocaine and two counts of delivering cocaine. McBride was arrested at his home and subsequently placed under $28,000 bond.
Citizen complaints sparked the campaign now resulting in the arrest of residents not just from one area of Sampson, but across the county. Arrests are expected to continue, with dozens anticipated to be brought in to face felony charges.
“All of the buys that the undercover agents made during the investigation are now at the point where warrants are being served,” Cpl. Marcus Smith said last week, upon the beginning of the arrests. “We are expecting numerous arrests to come. They did buys from all areas of the county, so we are expecting a lot more arrests.”
Arrests have been made in various parts of the county so far, including Roseboro, Clinton, Newton Grove, Autryville and the Godwin area,
The other 11 arrested thus far include: Kimberly Dawn Garason, 40, of 3974 Alex Benton Road, Newton Grove; Monteno Montrelle Tatum, 33, of 33 Marion Amos Road, Roseboro; Brandon Jahid Lewis, 22, 148 Greentree Lane, Clinton; Deron C. McIntyre, 22, 72 Capers Walk, Clinton; Terrence Lee Faison, 35, 34 Gill Lane, Clinton; Donnie Hooks, 49, 17 Harper St., Clinton; Matthew Joyner, 45, 93 Harper St., Clinton; Derrick Cornelius Conley, 25, 140 Rainbow Lane, Roseboro; and Tyronne Gerald Bailey, 26, 225 Brantwood Court, Roseboro; Michael Rajohn Jackson, 28, 655 Maynard Road, Godwin; and Kevin Jacobs, 43, 494 Carroll Store Road, Autryville.
Charges for the 11 suspects have ranged from trafficking in cocaine and opium to the sell and delivery of cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and opium. Bonds have ranged from $7,000 to $300,000.
