Two Sampson County teens were jailed under separate $100,000 bonds over the weekend, charged in connection with the April 14 robbery of a Piggly Wiggly employee in Roseboro.

Malique Taylor, 19, of 7234 Old Mintz Hwy., Garland, and Kelvin Bell Jr., of Myrtle Road, were each charged with one count each of felony robbery in connection with the incident.

Sampson County Sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith said investigation into the robbery, which occurred Sunday, April 14, led to the pair being identified as suspects in the case.

“Warrants were issued and the two were taken into custody,” Smith said.

Both are charged in connection with the robbery of the Piggly Wiggly employee who was attempting to deposit the day’s checks at a a nearby bank drop when one of the suspects reportedly approached the employee’s vehicle, snatched open the vehicle door and grabbed the bag, fleeing on foot.

The incident happened just after 10 p.m. April 14 on East Roseboro Street in the bank’s parking lot.

A second employee had followed their colleague to the bank since law enforcement had not been called for a security escort, which is usually standard procedure, but the incident happened so fast it was hard for anyone to react, officers said at the time of the incident.

Both suspects were still behind bars Monday afternoon.
