A Rose Hill man allegedly involved in a drive-by shooting on May 26 in Duplin County has turned himself in to local authorities.
Dalevonta Oneal McLamb, 24, of 229 Fourth St., Rose Hill, was charged with first degree murder after he showed up at the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office last Thursday, Aug. 9, wanting to turn himself in.
According to Capt. J.T. Giddons of the Wallace Police Department, McLamb was allegedly driving the vehicle involved in a drive-by shooting that took place May 26 in the 400 block of Satchell Street in Wallace.
Giddons said 9-year-old Leon Alde Halley III, who was visiting family members on vacation from New York, was killed instantly.
“A day after the incident, the alleged shooter, Meshan Kentay MacMillian, was charged,” Giddons explained.
MacMillan, 24, was subsequently charged with first degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling in a moving vehicle. However, after more interviews and investigation, it was discovered that McLamb was the one alleged to have been driving the vehicle involved in the drive-by shooting.
“We worked with the District Attorney’s Office and they gave us the go-ahead to put out the warrants for Mr. McLamb,” the captain said.
The suspect walked into the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office last Thursday around 4:10 p.m., surrendering to law enforcement. Local sheriff’s reports were not made available to the media until Monday morning.
“This case is still open,” noted Giddons, who would not say if there were any more suspects involved. “We are still investigating the case.”
