An apparent weekend argument turned violent when a machete-wielding northern Sampson County man struck another in the neck.
The incident happened in the wee hours of Saturday morning on Timber Lane, near Dunn, when Herlindo Perez, 71, and Thomas Gonzalez, also reportedly of Timber Lane, got into some type of altercation which led to Gonzalez being stabbed.
Sampson County sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene around 3:30 a.m., responding to a report of a stabbing victim. They found Perez, reports note, still holding the machete and attempting to attack Gonzalez.
Deputies told the suspect to drop the machete several times, but he failed to do so, leading officers to taser him. At that point, the suspect released the weapon and followed officers’ instructions.
Gonzalez was taken to Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital for treatment of a wound to his neck. Perez was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was jailed under $8,000 bond and given a court date of Oct. 26.
Betsy Johnson could not provide a condition report on Gonzalez.
