Tips have been pouring in to investigators after a daring early morning robbery at BB&T Bank, located at 307 Main St. in Newton Grove, Thursday morning.
“We have already gotten some good leads and we have had thousands comment about it on Facebook already,” said Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton Friday. “Our detectives have been working around the clock to try and catch those responsible.”
According to Detective Raymond Yeager, the two suspects, both described as young black males, went into BB&T around 9:15 a.m. with their faces covered, brandishing weapons and demanding money.
The pair, one about 5 foot 6 inches in height, the other around 5 foot 9 inches, took off on foot towards the Dollar General Store, just north of BB&T, after the robbery. In hand was an undisclosed amount of cash.
A suspicious burgundy passenger car was reportedly seen in the area before the robbery occurred, but it is unknown if the vehicle is connected to the robbery, officials said.
Surveillance photos were obtained of the suspects and have been released in hopes that someone might recognize one or both of the two armed men.
“We are getting the pictures out there and people are responding,” Thornton stressed. “Hopefully those tips will keep coming in and we will be able to make those arrests.”
The two men, the sheriff said, are considered armed and dangerous.
