The Roseboro Board of Commissioners will begin its search for a new town clerk this week after saying goodbye to the former one Tuesday night. Long-time town clerk Drenda Ammons, who recently announced her retirement, attended the meeting and was recognized for her years of service to the town and its residents.
After a special ceremony that had Mayor David Alexander presenting Ammons with a plaque for her service, interim town clerk Amanda Beatty and interim finance officer Sharon Williams, who was hired to help with Ammons’ workload, were officially sworn in. The new clerk, town officials noted, will assume the responsibilities currently being undertaken by the two interim staff members, once that person is hired.
Later in the meeting, the board discussed how they would go about weeding through the 28 applicants the town had received for the position.
“We need to talk about how we are going to go over these applications,” noted Commissioner Alice Butler. “Do we all want to do it at the same time, or do we want to come in and look them over two (board members) at a time?”
Alexander suggested that since the deadline on the applications was Aug. 7, board members should review them within the next few weeks.
“I would say everyone can come in and look through them on their own time and then whittle them down to your top five,” he said. “You would have a starting point on who you wanted in the position that way,” the mayor stressed.
Commissioner Roland Hall suggested the board call a special meeting so as to include all board members in the process from the beginning.
“Then all of us will have gone through the applications and we can pick out the top five or six that we want to consider,” he explained. “Then we can begin the interview process.”
“We will do it however the board wants to do it,” Alexander interjected. “You just have to decide how you want to do it.”
The full board decided that they will look over the applications on their own time, pick out their two favorites and then call a special meeting to pare the applicants down to the final five.
Alexander said the board should have their top two choices selected by the board’s next meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 21.
